THE NEW GREEK AMERICANS 1960-2018 explores the influences of successful second and third Greek Americans in business, education, sports, the arts, academia, etc. We look at how dating and intermarriage affect new generations. We see expanding Greek communities in suburban areas. And we follow the military experience from Vietnam to Afghanistan. The million dollar question is: Will our heritage survive, embedded in the framework that we know and love so well as Americans?Â
This film serves as Part III in a trilogy which first premiered in 2002 with The Pioneers 1900-1942, and Part II premiering in 2009: The Promise of Tomorrow 1940-1960. The New Greek Americans 1960-2018 beautifully celebrates how those of Greek descent in America view themselves by way of identifying with their heritage. The film is narrated and hosted by Olympia Dukakis (Academy Award Winner of Best Supporting Actress in 1987 for Moonstruck), and is interspersed with personal oral histories and narratives where various interviewees of Greek descent recount their personal experiences and stories. Interviews featured all generations, and many from varying professions, including but not limited to: branches of the Military, prominent professional/entrepreneurial leaders, community members, and celebrities/entertainment industry professionals.
The story begins with Greek Americans during the 60's embracing these changing times despite their conservative upbringings. Each decade influences the Greek community with events such as the Invasion of Cyprus and the nomination of Michael S. Dukakis for President of the United States. Heartfelt and humorous stories are also shared reflecting "Growing up Greek." Second and third generations display their active participation in their beloved ancestral heritage, but is it enough to keep Greek culture alive in America? Olympia Dukakis is our on camera host and narrator. This project is produced by the Greek Heritage Society of Southern California.
